TopGear’s 2009 Cars of the Year

After all the shouting and the flying fists, when the dust finally settles, the only question that matters is ‘Which one is best?'.

Supercar of the Year - Ferrari 458 Italia

The stunningly beautiful 458 Italia takes its driver to the edge of what's possible in a supercar.

'There is little to fault on the Italia. Time spent with this car is time spent with your mouth open and brain re-adjusting.'

Hot Hatch of the Year - Volkswagen Golf GTI

Thirty years since its birth, the VW Golf GTI remains as impressive as ever. We salute a miracle of motoring evolution.

'Like the National Theatre, the Golf GTI carries itself with a confidence born of weathering 33 years of passing fashions.'

Muscle Car of the Year - Ford Focus RS

A muscle car with the perfect blend of practicality and power.

Family Car of the Year - Skoda Yeti

To prove why the Skoda Yeti was the deserving winner of our Family Car award, we took it to the American Rockies and drove it up proper Big Foot country - Pikes Peak.

Least Boring Green Car of the Year - Ford Fiesta Econectic

Luxury Car of the Year - Skoda Superb

A Skoda? TopGear's Luxury Car of the Year? Yes indeed. 'Scything through the middle of eastern Europe couldn't be easier. The Journey is unremarkable for all the best possible reasons.'

Most Beautiful Car of the Year - Alfa Romeo 8C Spider

Alfa maintained its reputation for producing some of the world's most desirable cars with this, the 8C spider.

Manufacturer of the Year - Renaultsport

Creating a practical car with genuine sportiness is tough. Keeping it cheap is even tougher. But to do it with three cars?

GT Car of the Year - Mercedes-Benz SLS

The Stig takes Merc's SLS out on the TopGear test track for one fast - very fast - lap in our GT Car of the Year.

'On the road, the SLS is an astonishingly wild ride. And it's more than happy to play hooligan for as long as you want.' (Stig didn't say that though, obviously.)

City Car of the Year - Toyota Prius

Slightly begrudgingly, we hand the Prius our gong for City Car of the Year. City dwellers rejoice, petrolheads shrug indifferently.

Sports car of the Year - Lotus Evora Saloon Car of the Year - Jaguar XF S Diesel

We take two of Blighty's finest from dreary home to cloud-covered Mont Ventoux in Provence to find out why our Sports Car of the Year is doing its utmost to be a practical, economical GT. And why the most practical and economical alternative for continent-crossing duties, is a diesel.

Lifetime Achievement Award - Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV

This is the last incarnation of the Murcielago. Ever.

SUV of the Year - Audi Q7 V12

 a magnificent whirlwind of sins

Interior of the Year - Jaguar XJ

All we've done so far is sit in the new Jaguar XJ.

Car of the Year - Ferrari 458 Italia

In a year when not one but two Skodas win gongs, don't assume that a new Ferrari nabbing the big prize is a foregone conclusion. The 458 Italia isn't TopGear magazine's Car of the Year simply because it's a Ferrari: it's our winner because the scope of its abilities is absolutely breathtaking.
